A few years ago, when I decided to upgrade to a smart thermostat, my research led me to the benefits of a smart home. While the conveniences and features were impressive, I debated on whether an automation system was a worthwhile investment. I worried that I would struggle with the advanced technology and not utilize the full potential. It seemed more of a luxury than a necessity. However, I liked the idea of controlling all of my appliances and systems from a centralized hub. When I finally made the upgrade, I wondered how I had gotten by for so long without such a modern convenience. Having the automation system has greatly simplified my everyday life. I not only save time and money but better utilize my appliances. My refrigerator helps me to keep track of those items I need to pick up at the grocery store. The dryer lets me know when it’s time to schedule vent cleaning. The thermostat sends reminders to take care of filter changes and arrange for annual maintenance. I’ve even installed smart light bulbs that automatically know when to turn on and off. Because of geofencing, the automation system knows when the house is occupied or empty. It adjusts everything from temperature, lighting and humidity to security. The garage door automatically raises when I pull into the driveway and closes and locks behind me. The sound system welcomes me with music and there are lights on and a cup of hot coffee waiting in the kitchen. The dishwasher automatically starts up at the end of the night, and I can be sure all of the windows and doors are secure.
