Extreme cold leads to frozen pipes

Moving from the south to the north was a big change for my family.

My husband and I both grew up down south and had no experience with a cold climate.

We arrived in Vineland, New Jersey, in late September. The weather was absolutely beautiful. The temperature was just cool enough for a light jacket. We were amazed by the gorgeous colors of the leaves on the trees. My whole family was delighted by the fresh grapes, apples, squash, peppers, tomatoes and zucchini. We took the kids to a pumpkin patch and apple picking. By mid November the temperature had dropped below freezing. We had snow on the ground for Thanksgiving. By Christmas, we were experiencing temperatures in the negative digits. One morning, we suddenly had no water. We suspected that our water pipes were frozen but had no clue what to do about it. Fortunately, Google provided a list of fully licensed plumbing companies available for emergency services in Vineland. The first plumber I called offered to come right over. He arrived within fifteen minutes. He confirmed that the pipes were frozen. It was a huge relief when he was able to solve the problem within a couple of hours. We were very lucky that none of the pipes burst. The plumber explained the need to tighten up the basement and add insulation due to the extreme cold that is a regular part of winters in the local area. He suggested caulking around the windows and doors, filling up any cracks with foam insulation and investing into a basement heater.
